It happens in our closest relationships, often before we are even able to recognize it, we want something from another person, an answer, a choice, closeness, perhaps only the confirmation that we still hold an important place in their life. When what we are waiting for does not come, we do not feel only disappointment, we may experience a deeper wound, as though the other person’s rejection called into question our worth, our authority or the meaning of what we have shared.

In that moment, the person before us risks changing in our eyes, they are no longer someone with desires, fears and boundaries of their own, they become the person preventing us from obtaining what we believe…
